It is that time of year again, sports fans! We are accepting submissions for the 2013 All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival. The three day event has grown over the past five years, attracting the best sports films and screenplays from around the world and big industry names to boot.

Once again, the festival will be held in North Hollywood, CA, at the historic El Portal theater – a short distance from the world-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame and down the street from Universal Studios Hollywood. Nestled right in the middle of the major film studios and the best attractions Los Angeles has to offer, the 5th Annual All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival is your chance to celebrate sports in film, commercials and screenplays.

We will be announcing our panelists, guests and more as the weeks progress, stay tuned to this site, and if you haven’t already – sign up for updates in email and follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook.

2012 Festival Winners Announced

The 2012 All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival is in the books, and it was our biggest ever! We had our largest audiences and filmmaker participation yet, and of course, the most fun. The three day festival took place November 9th – 11th at the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood, CA.

In addition to coverage from the likes of ESPN Brazil, we were honored to have welcomed VIP’s like Director/Writer Peter Farrely and writers/producers from “CSI: NY”; “Crash & Bernstein” and “Whitney”.

We will be updating the site with photos and video from the event in the coming days and weeks, for now, here is the official list of 2012 ASLAFF winners. Peter Farrelly: All Sports LA Film Festival Keynote Speaker

(North Hollywood, CA) – October 31, 2012 – Writer/Director Peter Farrelly will be the keynote speaker at the 4th Annual All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival. The festival will be held November 9-11, 2012 at the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood.

Farrelly, known for hits “There’s Something About Mary”, “Dumb and Dumber”, and most recently “The Three Stooges” is an avid sports fan. He was fortunate to document the Boston Redsox World Series Championship while directing the Drew Barrymore film, “Fever Pitch”. (pic) Festival Director, Pat Battistini is ecstatic to have Farrelly on board this year, “Pete is such a talent and for him to come out and share his expertise and experiences with our filmmakers and screenwriters is a huge addition to the festival.”

The festival will screen 56 films from 10 countries. The program consists of everything from spec commercials to feature length films. The film “Freedom Spirit” comes to us from Brazil. It’s an amazing piece on the “Extreme Athlete”.

This year will also include a documentary film from HBO’s Real Sports Jon Frankel. His doc, “American Man” deals with the continuing saga of concussions in the NFL and their devastating results.

Some of the jury and judges include ESPN Sideline Reporter Holly Rowe, ESPN Color Commentators Dan Dakich and Rebecca Lobo, and 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist and Most Outstanding Boxer of the Games, Howard Davis, Jr.

The All Sports Film Festival, named “One of the Coolest Film Festivals of 2011”, is not only about the genre of sports but about the element of the human spirit and what lengths people go through to achieve their dreams and goals.

2012 Panelists announced

We are very proud to have three wonderful and talented panelists for the 4th Annual All Sports Film Festival.

Festival Director Pat Battistini will moderate the 60-minute Q&A that will include John Dove (Supervising Producer/Writer, “CSI NY”), Mike Larsen (Executive Producer, “Crash &Bernstein”, Co-Producer, “The Drew Carey Show”), & Theresa Mulligan (Co-Executive Producer, “Whitney” and “How I Met Your Mother”).

All three panelists have been nominated for various awards during their illustrious careers.

Best Sports Films Ever

First let me say that there is no such thing as the “Best”. The reason is because you’ll ask 100 people and the answers will be all over the place. So the bottom line is that the “best” is what you think is the “best”.

Just because “The Blind Side” won all kinds of praise doesn’t mean you have to like it. In fact, as a sports fan, I loathed it. Even though it’s “entertainment”, sports fans need to draw the line somewhere. My line was drawn when Sandra Bullock walked out on to the practice field to give “Michael” his blocking assignment and motivation. Anyone who has spent one day on any type of practice field knows that a coach would never go for this. It was just ridiculous – border line of stupid. I know it’s Hollywood doing it’s job but it was trying too hard.

Most of the sports genre films out there have great qualities to them. I just watched “Secretariat” the other day and found it quite entertaining. Even though there are many “cliche” moments in the film and you know how it turns out, it kept my interest. I remind myself all the time that these films aren’t a solid biography, but entertainment.

Most of my favorites have two common denominators in them – the writing and acting. Yeah, yeah, so what else is left? A lot. If you don’t have knowledge of the story and can’t get the actors on the same page as the filmmaker’s vision – it’s gonna be a train wreck.

Here are a few of my favs (and not so favs) with a few quick notes:

“Cinderella Man” is another great film. I could have used less Renee Zellweger but that’s just me. But Russell Crowe is awesome in it.

I thought “The Express” was done well but again, a few too many “cliche” moments in it for me. (I mean cliche as in the moment somebody does the traditional “point” at the opposing player or coach – yawn – that’s why I thought “Remember the Titans” was poorly done.)

You have to throw in “Pride of the Yankees” as a pure sports fan. The movie reflects the filmmaking process at the time, (which seemed amateurish), but you have to overlook that to enjoy the subject matter.

“Rudy” & “Hoosiers” – Anspaugh and Pizzo do a great job with both of these. Lots of fun characters to root for. Sean Astin brought that role to the table. I’ll watch “Hoosiers” anytime it comes on. Didn’t like the Gene Hackman – Barbara Hersey chemistry but that’s me. Dennis Hopper – please! Awesome.

“Sea Biscuit” another horse movie done well. Toby McGuire raised the bar in it.

“The Natural” – Redford’s Best – IMO.

I’d like to throw Dennis Quaid’s name in there just for his films as a wonderful actor – “The Express” and “The Rookie.”

I’ll quit my rambling with the “Miracle”. Fun film to watch. Again, we know the outcome, but it gives you goosebumps. Kurt Russell was a pleasure to watch and the support of the actor’s busting their nuts to make the scenes look real added to the essence of the film.
